(4) Work in education
BOURNEMOUTH UNIVERSITY: JH has worked as a part-time lecturer at Bournemouth University since 1997. The faculty’s recognition of the importance of graphic communication means that, since 2001, he has covered a broader range of topics. There are two lecture series, for various combinations of BSc and HND students:
The Heritage Management programme tends toward design elements in publication, display and exhibition.
The Archaeology programme is more concerned with image capture and archiving, and now contains elements on basic image formation, photography, digital imaging, field planning technique, finds recording and reconstruction.
GENERAL LECTURING: on similar topics (but mainly the historiography of reconstruction artwork). He has also given papers for the Open Lectures at Bournemouth University, the TAG Conference, IFA Conferences, U3A and various local history societies, etc.
(5) Research
In 1997 JH started researching the history, nature and functions of archaeological reconstruction drawing at Bournemouth University. The thesis resulted in a PhD award in 2004.
(6) AAI&S
JH was elected a full member of the Association of Archaeological Illustrators & Surveyors in 1996, Hon. Secretary in 1997 and Hon. Chair in 2000. Re-elected to Council in 2003.
(7) IFA
JH was elected as an Associate member of the Institute of Field Archaeologists in 2000, and as a Full member in 2003.
